Blue Marlin Fishing - Costa Rica FADS

What is a FAD?

The FAD is a "Fish aggregating devices" they are artificial structures that are deployed in the ocean to attract schools of fish. FADs function as open-ocean "meeting points" with multiple species gathering underneath them.

The target species for the FADs fishing in Costa Rica is Blue Marlin that in many cases can reach in between 200 lbs - 600 lbs. There is a lot of bi-catch there as well like Sailfish, Mahi-mahi, tons of small tuna and the occasional black or Striped Marlin.

There is no season for this type of trip. Since these FADs hold bait year-round, we have found that you can have a great FADs fishing Costa Rica trip any time of the year. With that said, more fish are caught and reported during the months of June – November.

Your typical FADS trip requires a departure from the marina late afternoon between 3pm – 6pm. This makes it nice for anglers looking to arrive in Costa Rica and head direct to the boat to head over to the FADS. Once aboard the boat, you will start your journey chugging to the FAD/Seamounts. This trip will take between 7 hours and 12 hours depending on the FAD your crew decides to head to first depending on the fishing reports. During this travel time, you get to enjoy the company of your crew, a great dinner and some shut eye (That is if you can control the excitement and actually get any sleep). Around 4:30 am, you will be woken up by the smell of fresh coffee and the crews feet hustling around on the deck. Once the light is bright enough you would see the fishing spread and you will start fishing. Typically this is around 5:30 am to 6:00 am. From there, you will have breakfast, fish until 1pm, eat lunch and fish until dark and then have dinner. After 2-3 or 4 days of fishing hard the night of the last day the vessel will start the return to the marina and will arrive at morning around 5:00 am – 7:00 am to take your shuttle back to the airport.

As of now, we offer 2, 3 and 4 days of fishing at the FADs overnight seamounts.
